Beardslee Castle

Located just 14 miles from Herkimer is the famous Beardslee Castle.

Executive Chef/Owner Randall Brown brings nearly 30 years of restaurant experience to the kitchen. Fresh, creative American cuisine with new and old world influences. Wood grilling meats & game to vegetarian & vegan dishes all in an unsurpassed setting of a 150 year old American/Irish Castle.

Built by Augustus Beardslee in 1860 with the craftsmanship of masons from Ireland and Switzerland, the limestone building is modeled in the style of an Irish castle. The building has suffered two major fires, the first in 1919 nearly destroyed the building and much of the stonework needed to be reworked. The oak paneled floors and ceilings were completely redone as nothing was left but the stone shell. A fire in 1989 gutted the kitchen areas and the building was left vacant for 3 years. After a two year restoration the restaurant reopened in 1994 under the present ownership.

With a rich history, including ghost stories, this is a must-see. Beardslee Castle was featured in a segment of “Haunted History” on the history Channel in October of 1999. The show explores historical sites with documented ghostly activity. On his initial visit to the Castle, the producer of the show was given a copy of a Ghost picture taken in the Dungeon (above). After documenting and producing shows at haunted locations throughout the country he had been given many, many such pictures but stated that the picture here was the “best he’d ever seen… bar none”
